Out of the Mouths of Babes

Sometimes I am so amazed at the grasp my children have on Biblical things. They've been in church all their lives, so it shouldn't surprise me, I guess. But seeing Biblical events through their eyes gives a whole fresh new meaning to faith and belief. I believe every word of the Bible. I believe the events it describes are literal actual events. I believe the people of the Bible really lived. But something about hearing it from my children's point of view ... well here--take a look:

We were listening to a sermon about the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel. The passage says they became a living, breathing army. One of my boys wanted to know if the army went back to where they lived before and got married and had kids who could say, "my dad used to be dead".

After a sermon on Noah's ark, one of the boys lodged on to the fact that the Bible says God shut the door of the ark seven days before it started to rain. He wanted to know if someone knocked and asked to be let in during that time, could they be saved on the ark too. I told him God shut the door, so it would have been up to God whether or not to let them in.

The boys were playing with G.I. Joes, and were discussing the biggest war ever. One of them said, "the biggest war we'll ever be in is ... what's that word that starts with an 'A'?"

"Armageddon?"

"Yeah. That one. We get to ride horses."

"I hope mine's white."

"I want mine to be gold."

I believe we'll be coming back on horses with Jesus for Armageddon because the Bible says so. But I never really thought about the color of my horse.

Through the eyes of a child. My boys definitely keep the Bible fresh for me.

How about you? Anything from God's Word really blessed your heart or stood out lately? Whether it's a favorite Bible story or a favorite verse, share it in the comments. Give me some fresh eyes.

  1. John 13:7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."

I know I've read this before, but at Beth Moore's blog she commented on this verse and it just really stood out to me. I have friends and family going through such tough things right now and I have a tendency to want to ask why? When they are Christians and living and serving Christ the best they know how and then this verse. I don't understand what He's doing, but I do know He is doing and He is there and I just have to trust Him with it. It just really helped me. I'm not sure I'm making sense with what I'm saying right now though. But I know this God has everything in His control and I trust Him and some day He'll let me understand it and that's good enough for me.

  2. When my youngest was in kindergarten her teacher had been discussing good health, healthy bodies, etc. That night she prayed, 'Thank you God for my strong healthy body. Because without it I'd just be a head.'

We still laugh about it but I love how very literal children are.

I'm reading Proverbs this month and while I've read it many times in the past I'm struck by how particular verses jump out at me and speak to me now, at the place I currently am...I'm sure I just went right on by some of those in other years. I love that God knows just what we need to hear and when we need to hear it.

    Have a nice week!

  3. Leave it to our children to come up with the most interesting comments! Thanks for sharing those, Jill! They blessed my heart today, much the same way God blesses me through the things my children say too!

  4. Such innocent but deep-impacting moments! Thanks for sharing those.

I had an important conversation with my (7yo) daughter the other night, when she wanted to write that God was who she admired most on her (public) school paper. She made me proud! The whole talk with her was enough to humble me.
